PVC Pipe Production Standards and Process

Sep 21, 2025

PVC Pipe Production Process
Raw Materials + Additive Preparation → Mixing → Conveying and Loading → Forced Feeding → Extruder → Extrusion Die → Sizing Sleeve → Vacuum Sizing Chamber → Immersion Cooling Water Tank → Inkjet Printer → Crawler Tractor → Cutting Machine → Pipe Stacking Rack → Finished Product Inspection and Packaging.

PVC production and application are growing at a 4% rate worldwide. The growth rate is particularly significant in Southeast Asia, driven by the urgent need for infrastructure development in these countries.

Process Conditions

  • Drying: Drying is generally not required.
  • Melting Temperature: 185-205°C.
  • Mold Temperature: 20-50°C.
  • Injection Pressure: Up to 1500 bar. Holding Pressure: Up to 1000 bar. Injection Speed: To avoid material degradation, an appropriate injection speed is generally used.
  • Typical Applications: Water supply pipes, household plumbing, house siding, commercial machine housings, electronic product packaging, medical devices, food packaging, etc.

Material Properties

ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene)

ABS is used for conveying drinking water, slurries, and chemicals. It is most commonly used in DWV (Drain Waste Vent) applications.

Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (UPVC) and CPVC (Post-Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride)

UPVC offers excellent chemical resistance throughout the entire operating temperature range and has a wide operating pressure range. Due to its long-term high strength, stiffness, and cost-effectiveness, UPVC systems account for a significant portion of plastic piping installations.

CPVC is resistant to a wide range of acids, bases, salts, alkanes, halogens, and alcohols. It is not resistant to solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, and certain chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Advantages of PVC Pipes

1. Excellent tensile and compressive strength: However, it is not as flexible as other plastic pipes.

2. Low fluid resistance: PVC-U pipes have very smooth walls, offering minimal fluid resistance. With a roughness coefficient of only 0.009, their water transport capacity can be 20% higher than cast iron pipes of the same diameter and 40% higher than concrete pipes.

3. Excellent corrosion and chemical resistance: PVC-U pipes are resistant to acids, alkalis, and corrosion, and are unaffected by moisture and soil pH. No anti-corrosion treatment is required during pipe laying.

4. Excellent watertightness: Whether installed using adhesives or rubber rings, PVC-U pipes are watertight.

5. Gnaw-resistant: PVC-U pipes are not a source of nutrients and are therefore not susceptible to rodent attack. According to tests conducted by the National Health Foundation in Michigan, rats and mice do not chew PVC-U pipes.
