The core of a car is not only the engine but also the generator. Many car enthusiasts do not understand the role of the car generator, and the generator regulator is because the rotor of the alternator is driven by the engine through a belt, and the engine speed changes from the lowest to about 800 rpm to a maximum of about 6000 rpm clock, so the rotation speed of the generator rotor changes in a very large range, which will cause a large change in the output voltage of the generator, which cannot meet the working requirements of automotive electrical equipment. In order to meet the constant voltage requirements of electrical equipment, the alternator must be equipped with a voltage regulator to keep its output voltage basically constant under all engine operating conditions.

The output voltage of the generator depends on the number of turns of the generator stator coil, the rotation speed of the generator and the intensity of the magnetic field generated by the rotor coil. What we can only adjust is the intensity of the magnetic field generated by the rotor coil. The automotive alternator voltage regulator controls the strength of the magnetic field by controlling the current flowing through the rotor coil.
